Over 15,000 Visitors Participated in the Inaugural Gold Coast Motor Festival

Sino Group is delighted to share that the inaugural Gold Coast Motor Festival, held during the National Day Weekend of 1 and 2 October 2016, has attracted more than 15,000 delighted festival-goers. The world-class Gold Coast Motor Festival hosted locals and tourists from all walks of life, from motor enthusiasts, car collectors, to families and children, making it an unforgettable weekend for everyone who came. ‘This is a very encouraging result for the first edition of Gold Coast Motor Festival, a new mega event carefully curated to add to Hong Kong’s status as Asia’s world City and positively contribute to Hong Kong’s tourism,’ remarked Mr Robert Kaiwai, General Manager of Hong Kong Gold Coast.

‘Gold Coast Motor Festival has become Hong Kong’s premier motor celebration with its carefully curated car displays and programme, it is wonderful to see such an inclusive and international event that welcomed car lovers and families,’ added Mr Eugene Leung, General Manager of Gold Coast Motor Festival.

Visitors from Hong Kong and around the world had fun participating in a variety of family-oriented activities at Gold Coast Motor Festival, while motor enthusiasts admired over 60 coveted collector cars – ranging from La Ferrari, Porsche 918, Pagani Huayra, McLaren F1, Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing, Ferrari Daytona, Nissan R34 Z Tune, BMW Z1, Aston Martin V8 Zagato Volante, Pontiac Firebird, Jaguar E-Type Roadster, Ferrari F40 and Porsche 959, providing motoring aficionados with a rare and unmissable opportunity.

A panel of judges comprising the Chief Judge, Mr Joseph Fung, renowned architect and car collector, and a group of automotive experts, including Mr Lawrence Yu MBE, BBS, JP, President of Hong Kong Automobile Association; Mr James Ogilvy-Stuart, Chairman of Aston Martin Owners Clubs (Hong Kong); Mr Frank Yu, founder of the Gravity Partnership & Craft-Bamboo Racing Team; Mr Alain Li, United Autosports racing driver and car collector, and Mr J Philip Rathgen, Chief Executive Officer of Classic Driver and a judging member of the International Prestigious Concours has selected the crème de la crème among the rare gems from over 60 displayed cars at the festival for the Best Competition Hero, Best Collector’s Classic, Best American Muscle, Best Alternative Speedster, Best Dream Super Car, Best Collector’s Porsche, Best Collector’s Aston Martin and Best of Show Winner.

Results of the Concours d’Elegance were announced at the ‘Cars Award Presentation’ held on 1 October 2016.

The UBS x MakerBay Electric Vehicle Lab was another crowd-pleasing highlight at the Motor Festival which the Financial Secretary, The Hon Mr John Tsang Chun-wah, GBM, JP and other officiating guests visited on the opening day, testing the VR (virtual reality) application and viewing the electric vehicle prototype. The home-grown concept car is based on the Open Source Vehicle (OSVehicle) technology. The EV Lab is led by a team of innovative and primarily student designers and engineers. Children visitors also had the chance to create their own concept cars with 3D printing.

Kids were particularly thrilled by the Tomica Wonderland with multiple interactive workshops and a spin-the-wheel lucky draw, while talented young artists had an immersive creative session at the Art Futures Kids Art Zone. Other festival activities featured the hugely popular Gold Coast electric outdoor mini train ride and the car-themed bouncy castles and inflatables.

A series of Gold Coast Motor Talks were conducted during the Gold Coast Motor Festival. One of the most interactive sessions was hosted by Mr Douglas Young, founder of Goods of Desire (G.O.D.) Lifestyle Group and an avid vintage car collector, and Mr Carl Yuen, Vice Chairman of the Classic Car Club of Hong Kong, at the main lawn, sharing their passion in collecting classic cars to inspire the next generation of car enthusiasts.
